I think we can all agree that the fashion industry has taken more leaps and bounds in the last five years than any other period in our lifetime. The changing of the guards has never been so swift. The recessions’ less than welcome appearance aligned perfectly with the exploding relevance of bloggers and street style. We have watched the general population gain more access to the once very closed and exclusive fashion industry an ever before. With all the changes I have to say the most interesting phenomenon to happen is the allure of the editor. Street photographers outside of shows are now choosing to chase down Taylor Tomasi Hill instead of Natasha Poly. The irony of this is – fashion magazines are struggling. This new fashion world where the Internet and personal style reign supreme are not very conducive to the traditional print magazine. I love nothing in the world more than a quality fashion magazine…literally not a single thing makes me happier. However, to the general, moderately obsessive fashion fan, the over the top, model heavy, fashion glossies are becoming less and less necessary, not to mention the Internet is FREE.
But the editor is kind of the best of all worlds isn’t she?
Yes they are often times beautiful (Carolinne Issa…really? Gorgeous), but it’s an achievable and universal beauty, Abbey Lee Kershaw is not the easiest person to relate to physically. Yet with the editor, you still get that aspirational reaction that we all so desperately want from high fashion. They’re better dressed than, well, anyone. They’re not celebrities. They have a genuine understanding and passion for clothing. The editors has become the new superheroes. It will be interesting to see if their popularity eventually trumps the actual publications they work for…stranger things have happened.
